Picking out ther perfect Pub Gift for the host

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

It’s only good manners to bring something when you are a guest in somebody’s home. Most people enjoy entertaining & pub gifts. Manners and good breeding aside though , purchasing that present, particularly if you do not know your host very well, can be frightening. These are some tips to bear in mind to give a gift which will finish up in use, not in the back of a dark cupboard. Purchase Something Your Host Wants or Will Like. Believe it or not, most people out there buy others things they desire themselves. We are all guilty of it. If I need to purchase a gift for someone that isn’t a book lover, I panic.

Whether you’ve met them only a couple of times, or never before, there are a few items you can depend on in a pinch. If your host entertains frequently serving trays are always greatly appreciated. Wine is another old standby, but before you suspect you are saved and run out to the spirits store, check to ensure your host drinks. The very last thing you want is to hand a recovering alcoholic a bottle of wine. If you already know your host sometimes indulges, but are not sure what sort of wine they like, think about your favorites, or even some personalized wine gifts for a really special touch. Telling your host that you bought your all time favorite wine for them is a touching gesture, irrespective of whether or not they like that particular vintage.

If you have even the tiniest bit of creativity within you, consider making a basket. Fill the basket with your fave bath products, some wine, a candle, or anything more you can come up with! If you live in a wet climate, even a compact umbrella will be a unique addition to the basket! If you are not creative yourself, hire a basket consultant or purchase a pre-made basket from your local dept or drug store.

The Hastle of Hostess Gifts

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

Tis the season for those great holiday parties. They are fun to attend, and the hosts went to a great deal of trouble to make it a memorable event for you. So, yes, it’s only polite to take the host a gift along to show how much you appreciate the invitation. But as you’re rushing out the door to get to that party, that’s when you remember that you don’t have a gift on hand – except for that old bottle of wine that’s been sitting on the shelf since you threw a party.

Hostess gifts don’t have to be a hastle. When you are putting together your Christmas list, add a couple of hostess gifts to that list. Even if you haven’t received an invitation, you’ll have something on hand without having to take an extra trip to the mall.

Some ideas for that list would include bar or wine accessories, such as wine stoppers, coasters, or bottle openers. Or you could go beyond bar and party and go for the pampering theme. Ideas would include scented soaps or candles. Every hostess could use a bit of rest and relaxation after throwing a party.

So don’t go to your next holiday party with the standard bottle of wine, or worse, nothing at all. Plan ahead and really show your hosts how much you appreciate their invitation.

Everyone Is Turning 40!

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

Today is my husband’s birthday. He is 39 years old today, and he’s a bit younger than most of our friends. So that means most of our friends have either turned 40 or will be turning 40 sometime this year. Forty seems to be the BIG BIRTHDAY. Maybe it’s because we’ve spent the last several years celebrating our kids’ birthdays and trying to forget our own. Forty used to be the mid-point of our lives becase most people didn’t live to be 80 years old. That’s no longer true, but a 40th birthday still brings out the black baloons and “Over the Hill” signs.

The most popular gift you give to a 40 year old seems to be ideas for a mini vacation. My 40th is coming up in about 4 months, and several relatives and friends have asked me where we are going to meet to celebrate. The ideas have included New York City, Las Vegas, and a spa retreat. All of these ideas sound great, but no one has offered to pay for these trips! So I guess their gift to me is that they are willing to go with me to the spa!

In the meantime we’ll celebrate my husband’s 39th birthday in our normal way with a little cake a little song and a little fun. Then we’ll start planning and saving for his 40th!

Inspiring Teachers

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

Did you ever have one of those teachers? You know, the one that had a bad name around the school for being mean. You were scared to death to step in that classroom on the first day of school. But then you discovered something. This teacher could actually teach! Discipline reigned in the classroom, so everyone could get down to the business of learning. You also discovered that this teacher could be a lot of fun, as he/she found new and unusual ways to get the point across.

I was blessed with more than one such teacher in my days. I still remember some Shakespeare and calculus thanks to them, even though I don’t use it every day! My daughter has a severe disinterest in science and was scared to death of her science teacher this year. She has now found out that if you work hard, there’s so much to be learned from this teacher. My daughter is finally inspired by science!

Our teachers are such a gift, especially those really good ones! Be sure to let them know how much you appreciate their hard work, sacrifice, and love of teaching.

All Golfers Will Love Golf Themed Coffee Mugs

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

What better way for a golfer to start their day than by having that morning cup of coffee or hot chocolate in one of the many golf themed coffee mugs available today. Whether the golfer loves golfing jokes, pictures of golf equipment, pictures of famous golfers or quotes from those same famous golfers, there are a myriad of golf themed coffee mugs available for the savvy golf gift giver.

Why not choose a coffee mug personalized with the golfer’s initials, so everyone in the household will know which cup to use. Perhaps rather than just initials, personalization with a golf quip by the gift recipient themselves would be appropriate. Whatever the final gift choice, if it has a golf theme, the golfer is sure to love it.

Keeping the Family Organized

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

I know, I’m strange. I’m one of those people that loves to organize. I even enjoy watching those organizing shows where the professional organizer takes a chaotic room and transforms it into a lovely, functional space. But, I’m also a real mom with a job, active kids, and a dog to care for. So, on any given day, you could walk into my home and never be able to guess that I love to organize.

But, I love organizing tools – such as shelves, cabinets, canisters, and tote bags. In my garage there’s a laundry basket for all of the baskteballs, volleyballs, any type of balls. Before I purchased the basket, these balls could be found in every room of the house. In other words, wherever my daughter left the ball or wherever my husband kicked it because it was in his way is where it stayed. I would love to be able to tell you that now all of the balls always end up in that basket, but I would be lying to you. However, they do end up there 90% of the time – which is much better than I hoped for. For another example, this summer I invested in a great beach bag. This bag keeps the swim goggles, swim toys, sunscreen, and pool passes. So, when we want to go to the pool, all we have to do is grab the towels and head out the door. I will admit that this bag is great, but the bag itself doesn’t have a home. So, it lives in the hallway where we all walk. But that’s OK. Once school starts, it will find a home out of the way until next summer.

So, I will keep organizing with less than 100% success. But I will also continue to have fun with it, and will enjoy a few corners of organized bliss!

Do We Ever Slow Down?

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

Here we are, in the dog days of summer. Have you relaxed yet? I don’t think I have. Even though school is out, our lives seem just as scheduled and crazy as they were during the school year. Last weekend was a softball tournament, one child has summer day camp that requires pick-up and drop-off, another needs to get to swimming lessons each day at 2:00. My husband has to work late so instead of getting my work done while he entertains the kids, I take them swimming. It’s been one week after another like that, and I’m beat.

To top it off, they are already advertising school supplies and back to school sales. Summer has hardly begun, and already my kids are begging to go shopping for school.

My kids are happy with this busy-ness. I’m not sure they would know what to do with down-time. However, we did have one evening with nothing to do, and they actually played with the toys they have, and they used their creativity to make a dollhouse out of cardboard. They had the time of their lives!

I think I’ll take their cue and spend a couple of minutes sitting in a deckchair and reading that book that’s been sitting in my to-do pile. I refuse to let summer pass me by, even if I have gotten a late and crazy start!
